Mr. Matthew N. Millar

Teacher

Bachelor of Music
Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)

Mr. Millar has always been obsessed with two things: learning and creativity. Since childhood, he has spent most of his free time in independent learning. He loves reading non-fiction books about science, arts, culture, and history. But he also enjoys reading fiction, especially classic science-fiction and fantasy stories. To this day, he continues online study in subjects such as mathematics, language, creative writing, computer programming, and psychology.

Throughout his time at school, Mr. Millar enjoyed learning science and technology as well as art and music. Although he focused on art in high school, he decided to study music at college and university. After graduating top of his contemporary music class at college, he went on to study classical music, world music, composition, and conducting at university. Mr. Millar’s love of science and nature even led him to study horticulture and work on vineyards.

Mr. Millar began his career as a music teacher and performer. Then, in 2001, he came to Korea to teach English. He enjoyed teaching English so much, he returned to his home in New Zealand to become a qualified language teacher. He soon found work at the University of Otago Language Centre (UOLC), where he taught students from all over the world. He taught general English, individual skills (reading, writing, listening, grammar), business English, and test preparation (IELTS, TOEIC, and TOEFL). Aside from teaching at the UOLC, Mr. Millar also developed the TOEFL and TOEIC test curricula, Digital Language Laboratory (DLL) instruction manual, and listening materials.

In 2004, Mr. Millar decided to return to Korea to teach adults and children at academies and universities. In that time, he has taught English conversation, writing, test preparation (IELTS, TOEIC Speaking, TOEFL, NEAT, OPIc), presentation, debating, culture studies, mathematics, and music. Mr. Millar also co-authored a set of textbooks for a university English conversation program, developed numerous curricula, and led a team of more than ten foreign language instructors at a university. Outside of these professional responsibilities, Mr. Millar led a foreigners’ social group and was president of the Suwon chapter of the Korea TESOL teachers’ association (KOTESOL). Currently, Mr. Millar lives in Jinju with his wife and two children. He enjoys living in this small but beautiful city, and he loves teaching here at LIIP. He feels extremely lucky to have the opportunity to teach both creative and technical subjects. Mr. Millar intends to stay long-term at LIIP in Jinju, where he will continue to learn to become a better teacher as he helps children learn.
